Inside Episode XXXX: Join us for an exclusive panel discussion with the brilliant cinematographers behind Netflix’s "One Hundred Years of Solitude" adaptation! Join Paulo Pérez (The Head of Joaquín Murrieta, Frontera Verde) and María Sarasvati Herrera (Women in Blue, Summer White), as they share the artistry and imagination that brought Gabriel García Márquez’s iconic novel to life on screen.

Guided by expert moderator Josh Apter, Paulo and María dive into their creative process, unpacking key scenes and revealing the techniques they used to capture the magical realism of Márquez’s world. Don’t miss this behind-the-scenes journey into the visual storytelling that makes this adaptation so extraordinary.

Maria Sarasvati Herrera, AMC is a French-Mexican cinematographer born in Mexico City who has built a visually stimulating and impressive body of work. As of December 2024, audiences worldwide will see her work on Netflix’s highly-anticipated eight-episode series, "One Hundred Years of Solitude." The film is based on Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez’s best-selling and epic novel, widely considered as a Latin American literary classic. Herrera lensed the main unit photography for episodes 5 and 6 of the hit Apple TV+ series "Women in Blue" (Las Azules), alongside shooting the second unit for the entirety of the show. She is the sole female cinematographer on the show, which follows the first four women to join Mexico's police force in the 70s.

 

Her past work in television includes Netflix’s "The Most Beautiful Flower" (2022), for which she lensed all ten episodes of the award-winning comedy series. Herrera’s work has screened at film festivals globally, including the Guadalajara International Film Festival in 2024, where her film "The Muleteer," received nominations for the Mezcal Award and Premio Maguey. In 2020, her second feature film, Summer White, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Best Film Award at the Málaga Film Festival. Her earlier works have been featured at: the Cine Latino Film Festival; Berlinale Talents Guadalajara (2014); and Berlinale Talents Berlin (2016). In 2010, her work on El vacío as part of the Student Etudes Competition was nominated for a Golden Tadpole at the prestigious Camerimage International Film Festival. Herrera graduated from the University Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica with a focus in Cinematography. Based in Mexico City, Herrera is represented in Mexico by 9AM Cinematography.

Paulo Pérez, ADFC, has over 25 years of experience in cinematography, working on feature films, documentaries, and series across Colombia, Mexico, India, Tunisia, the USA, France, England, Qatar, and more. He is the co-founder of the Colombian Guild of Cinematographers (ADFC) and a cinematography lecturer at the International Film and TV School in San Antonio de Los Baños, Cuba.

 

His latest work includes the Netflix original series "One Hundred Years of Solitude," based on Gabriel García Márquez’s novel and directed by Alex Garcia Lopez and Laura Mora. In 2022-2023, he worked on the series" Jengaburu: The Curse," directed by Nilha Panda and filmed in Odisha, India, for Sony Live.

 

Other notable projects include the Amazon Prime series "The Head of Joaquín Murrieta," a western filmed in the Durango desert in Mexico, and "News of a Kidnapping," another adaptation of García Márquez’s work. Pérez also shot "Green Frontier", a series filmed entirely in the Amazon Rainforest and directed by Ciro Guerra, Jacques Toulemonde, and Laura Mora.

Among his standout films are "Pickpockets" (Peter Webber),"Anna" (Jacques Toulemonde), "Blunt Force Trauma" (Ken Sanzel), "Chocó "(Jhonny Hendrix), and "The Wind Journeys "(Los viajes del viento, Ciro Guerra).

Josh Apter has worked in all areas of filmmaking, from location sound recordist on numerous feature films, to videographer for Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Foundation, where he recorded the testimonies of over 150 Holocaust survivors. As a film editor, Josh has worked on over ten feature films including "The Holy Land" (winner Slamdance FF/Cavu Pictures Distributor), "Kaaterskill Falls" and "Barbecue is a Noun" (Audience Award for best Documentary at the Rome International Film Festival and the River Run Film Festival).

 

From his love of post-production, Josh founded Manhattan Edit Workshop in 2002. MEWShop is an Avid, Assimilate, and Blackmagic Authorized Training Center offering a variety of classes in the art and technique of film editing. With clients ranging from AMC Networks, HBO, NBC, CBS, WNET, and CNN; Manhattan Edit Workshop has become the premier training destination for the highest-level content creators and media professionals.
